How to Start a Clothing Brand with a Manufacturer

AL HASEEB APPARELS · BUYER GUIDE

Start with one clearly defined garment, an intended customer and a written product brief. A manufacturer can assess a specific T-shirt or hoodie more usefully than a broad request to “make a clothing brand”. Work from the brief to sampling, then approve the final specification and commercial terms before bulk production.

1. Choose the first product and customer

Define who will wear the garment, the intended fit and your planned selling channel. Decide what makes the product recognisable: fabric, silhouette, decoration or a particular finish. Begin with a focused assortment that you can explain and review clearly.

Explore T-shirt manufacturing, hoodie manufacturing and streetwear development. A reference image can communicate direction, while actual measurements and material details define the garment to be made.

2. Prepare a working tech pack

A tech pack brings the design and production instructions into one controlled document. You can start with an initial brief, then develop the missing details with the supplier before approving an order. Mark each revision with a date or version so sample comments refer to the same specification.

IncludeDescribe clearly
Design and constructionFront and back drawings, seam details, neckline, pockets, hood and trims where relevant.
FabricFibre composition, construction, finished GSM, colour and reference handle.
MeasurementsFinished-garment chart, units, measurement points, size grading and tolerances.
BrandingArtwork files, dimensions, placements, labels and hangtags.
Assortment and packingPieces by style, colour and size; folding, bags, cartons and destination.

3. Request comparable manufacturer quotations

Send the same specification to each supplier you are assessing. Ask what the quote includes, which decisions remain open, and how MOQ applies to styles and colours. Use our MOQ guide to frame those questions.

Request separate sample costs and bulk pricing, the proposed approval stages, payment terms, packing basis and freight scope. Give your delivery country and postcode. A garment price alone does not describe the total cost or the date stock will reach your receiver.

4. Review samples against the brief

Measure the sample, try the fit on an appropriate wearer and review fabric feel, construction, decoration and labels. Record each change precisely. “Make it better” is difficult to act on; a measurement, placement correction or reference swatch creates a clearer instruction.

Agree how laundering and other requested checks will be assessed. If the order uses multiple sizes, discuss a size-set review before bulk approval. Keep approved artwork versions and sample comments together. Our sampling and production process explains the sequence in more detail.

5. Confirm the bulk order specification

Approve the final garment details, quantity breakdown, material references, labels, packing and the sample that governs production. Record the inspection criteria, commercial terms, proposed schedule and shipping responsibilities in writing. Changes after approval should be reviewed for their effect on price and timing.

For private label clothing, check the actual label and packaging artwork alongside the garment. Provide wording and languages appropriate to your sales markets through your buyer or importer team.

6. Plan receiving and the next order

Arrange how cartons will be received and how the delivered assortment will be checked. Keep the approved specification and order records for reorders. Use sales and customer feedback to decide which fits, colours and sizes to repeat or revise.

Can I contact a manufacturer before the tech pack is finished?

Yes. Send the references, estimated quantity, intended fit and destination you already have. State which details need development. The manufacturer can then identify what must be resolved before an accurate quotation or sample approval.
